An Orthodox baptismal font holds water used during the sacrament of Baptism . A baby is typically submerged into the water during the service - an adult - poured water over the head over the baptismal font.  Historically, baptism in a basin (vs the river) evolved as a practice when Christians were persecuted and had to practice the Sacrament of baptism indoors in secret.
