Sweet” Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Charles Sherrell is an American bassist best recognized for his work with James Brown.

He began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee, playing drums at a club with Billy Cox and Jimi Hendrix, two of his neighbors. Sherrell washed Curtis Mayfield’s Jaguar in return for guitar lessons so he could learn how to perform.

Sherrell joined James Brown’s ensemble in August 1968.

Sherrell helped produce some of James Brown’s best-known songs from the late 1960s, including the #1 R&B hits “Mother Popcorn,” “Give It Up or Turn It A Loose,” “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud,” and others.

Sherrell died away on March 29, 2023, at the age of 80. His reason of death wasn’t made public.
