GoFundMe; Craig Cope Passes Away, Norco liquor-store owner, 80, who gained viral fame for blasting armed robber
An 80-year-old Norco liquor store owner who gained notoriety earlier this year for shooting an armed robber with a shotgun has passed away.
On July 31, Craig Cope was captured on camera firing one shot at a suspect who had just barged into the store brandishing a firearm. One of the four males that drove up with the intention of robbing the store was the suspect.
However, after Cope shot him with the shotgun, the suspect fled and was captured on camera yelling “He shot off my arm! He shot off my arm!”
Cope briefly became a local celebrity thanks to media attention and viral videos of the security footage.
After the robbery, Cope had a heart attack, but he later recovered and resumed his job. Later, in October, he had a stroke.
His passing was posted on the store’s Facebook page early on Tuesday.
“This morning, Craig was lost. I apologize for my lack of words at the moment, but I vowed not to leave you in the dark. When I decide on a date for the memorial, I’ll be sure to let you know. It will take place here at the store.”
According to the GoFundMe created to support his family, Cope has owned and operated the shop since 1976.
Following the shooting, all four suspects were apprehended after being found in a hospital where the victim of the shooting was receiving treatment.
Several firearms, more evidence, and the car that was stolen out of Las Vegas were all found by deputies.
