Sergeant Brendon Mendoza, my son, died in a severe head-on collision on May 12, 2014. He was slain for having three times the permitted amount of methyl, too! He traveled 35 miles in the wrong direction on four different highways before colliding head-on with my son’s vehicle. While fighting to keep the residents of Mesa safe and his town safe, my son was tragically killed while on his way home after finishing his shift.

The Guerrero Park area in Mesa has just undergone rehabilitation, which is just one of Brandon’s many life goals. He put in many hours to make this area, especially the children, a safe place for families.

In order to give tenants a safe place to live, he works with the City of Mesa Building Code Department to encourage landlords to repair their rental homes. Everyone he encountered became a buddy of his. The neighborhood knew they could rely on him and that he would look out for them.Every year for the residents he works with on a daily basis, Brandon collaborates with the Boys & Girls Club of Grant Woods to prepare a community Thanksgiving luncheon. The Boys and Girls Club chapter director Chris Quasula dubbed it the Mendoza Thanksgiving Dinner in Brandon’s honor. The dinner will take place this year on November 16, 2017. Due to the fact that many families struggle to pay for their children’s monthly school expenses, any extra money is used to support the boys and girls chapter.
