John Roland, a longtime anchor at FOX 5 in New York and a former journalist and newscaster for WNYW, passed away today, May 7, 2023.

John was a highly known and admired journalist with the epitome of professionalism.

With his composed attitude, he guided FOX 5 New York viewers through nearly 30 years of trying circumstances.

Roland spent his last years living with his wife Zayda in their Florida home, where he enjoyed being a husband and grandfather. Even though he had long retired from New York news, his love for the city and current events was unabated.

Roland was married four times, but had no children. After many years living in New York, he moved to North Miami shortly after his retirement from broadcasting. On September 10, 2002, Roland was rushed to a local hospital after experiencing diverticulitis.

He was a fantastic news caster and board president. He was witty and delighted in making others laugh. He sincerely cared about each employee and wanted the best results for Hidden Bay and everyone.

In the 1960s, Roland began his radio career. In Los Angeles in 1966, NBC News gave him his first significant task. Rolan was hired to report for the then-owned Metro Media Station in LA, KTTV, after a brief spell at NBC. He covered both the Charles Manson trial and the Robert F. Kennedy assassination there.

Roland relocated from the West Coast to the East Coast in December 1969 to join Metro Media, which later evolved into FOX 5 News.

During the week, Roland covered politics, and on weekends, he served as the 10 o’clock news anchor. In 1979, he began serving as the primary news anchor for the weeknight broadcast.
