On November 18, 1964, in Fort Benning, Georgia, Mr. Kirkland was born to Evelyn Jane Stewart Kirkland and the late Larry Gene Kirkland, Sr. He attended Auburn University and then spent many years as the proprietor of Picasso Pizzeria and Uptown Tap in the Columbus/Phenix City area until retiring in 2021.

Mr. Kirkland’s career in the restaurant industry spans more than 28 years, beginning long before he ever owned any of these specific locations. Besides his hardwork and long hours in the restaurant industry, he dedicated himself to the people in the neighborhood by feeding the homeless every Thanksgiving, providing food, and working in collaboration with Toys for Tots and was always delighted to sponsor kid sport activities. Mr. Kirkland had many interests, including watching Alabama football, going to the movies, and dining out. He loved to spend time in his garden while watching old westerns and, of course, his all-time favorite channel, The Cooking Channel. Mr. Kirkland was most anticipating quality time with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren. The family remembers him as a good funny man who made people grin and laugh – but most of all a man with a genuine good heart for others.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his life partner, Melissa Kirkland; a brother, Christopher Sean Kirkland; and maternal grandparents, Paul and Elizabeth Stewart. Kristen Kirkland of Panama City Beach, Florida, and Savannah Stewart and her husband Frank of Columbus, Georgia; Kevin Kirkland of Phenix City, Alabama, and Jaxson Chambers of Columbus; his mother, Jane Brown of Columbus; two sisters, Kelly Ann Kirkland of Ellaville, Georgia, and Janet Lee DeRhodes and her husband Rick of Norwood, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Bentley, Kaleb, Noah, Isaiah, Carter, Amelia, and “King” Nat
A toy collection box will be available throughout the viewing and the burial service if anyone would want to provide a gift for the children in attendance.
