Matt Byars Obituary, Baseball Michigan State Spartans Player
Matt Byars, a former Michigan State baseball player, died in a rock climbing accident on Tuesday, the university reported Thursday. He was 27 years old at the time.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Byars family,” said Michigan State coach Jake Boss Jr. in a statement. “Matt was a pleasure to coach, and his outgoing personality was an important part of our program both on and off the field.” We are devastated by his death as a result of a horrific rock climbing accident in Colorado.”
Before joining the Spartans, Byars played two seasons at Heartland Community College in Illinois. The catcher lettered two years at Michigan State (2016-17), appearing in 102 games and batting.278 with 30 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, and 51 RBIs.

Byars threw out 12 baserunners in his debut season with the Spartans and was awarded the team’s defensive MVP. The Twins selected him in the 24th round of the 2016 MLB draft, but he returned to Michigan State for his senior season, when he hit.271 with 14 doubles, four home runs, and 25 RBIs.
