Obituary | Susan Lee Schanze and Passes Away
Susan (Sue) Lee Schanze age 77 left this world to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 13, 2022.
Sue is survived by her husband of 57 years Robert Schanze, her children: Michelle, Michael, Mark, and Jeff; their spouses, Greg Smarslok, Sheri Schanze, Katelyn Schanze, Cheryl Schanze; her brother Richard Fessenden (wife, Cecilia), her brother in law, Dean Andreessen, her sister in law, Lois Havel; her grandchildren: Halley, Bryce, Kyle, Jesse, Amanda, Madison, Reagan, Easton, Londyn, Bradley, Colby; her nieces and nephews: Steven, Jon, Aaron, Allison, Kimberly, Kyle, Charles, Shari, Richard, Jenny, and Julie.
Sue was born in Concordia, Kansas. She is the daughter of the late Delmore Fessenden and Virginia Randall. Her dad was a pilot in the Air Force and the family moved to Castle Air Force Base (Atwater, CA) in 1958. Sue attended Atwater High School where she was a song leader and involved in school leadership.
It was her freshman year at Atwater High School where she met the love of her life, Bob Schanze. Upon high school graduation, Sue attended Sterling College in Kansas.
Two years later, Bob and Sue were married on September 12, 1965. Sue continued her education at Fresno State and became a teacher while Bob was pursuing pro baseball and serving in the Army National Guard. 2 years later they welcomed their first child. Over the next 10 years, their family grew adding 3 more children.
Her love of Christ and love of people led her to hosting Bible studies, women’s lunches, counseling, speaking at conferences, and writing articles with one of the articles being published in a women’s Christian magazine.
Sue became the director of Alpha Crisis Pregnancy Center in Merced. While attending Christian Life Center, she was installed and licensed as Women’s Pastor. Sue attended Day Spring College in the Bay Area earning a degree in Pastoral Counseling.
Sue opened a counseling office in Atwater which served the local community and churches. From 2002-2019, Sue was on the pastoral staff at Gateway Community Church.
Sue loved people and had a tremendous impact on countless lives. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. We will miss her unmistakable laugh, smile, and willingness to talk to anyone even if everyone else was in a hurry.
She never walked past a person without a smile or kind word. All who were blessed to know Sue will miss her greatly.
