The Dirt devotes some time to establishing Motley Crue as a group that thinks about their band image pretty carefully (if drunkenly). That’s why it’s not exactly a surprise the movie doesn’t mention the time that they turned in such a miscalculated product it got them banned by MTV.
The movie The Dirt is, of course, based on the book by the same name, and this dual attack of filthy hard rock stories is arguably the most important reason the world is still interested in Motley Crue instead of, say, Poison or Ratt. Wouldn’t it be pretty weird if all that were built on a lie?
In many ways, fact-checking a movie about Mötley Crüe is a ridiculous task, especially a film that says right off the bat it is merely “based” on a true story. It’s also a film that breaks the fourth wall and tells the audience that things didn’t happen quite as they’re being presented.
For the hair metal band Mötley Crüe, The Dirt was a fitting title for a collection of true stories and biographical film. The fact is, these guys were filthy — unkempt, unclean, unpleasant, unrepentant — and they liked it that way.

In the Netflix film, an adolescent version of Sixx quarrels with his mother and describes a “ revolving door of step-fathers .” The narrative then jumps ahead several years to 1978 Los Angeles, where Frank reinvents himself as Nikki Sixx.

For the most part, The Dirt’s casting choices are believable, especially with Game of Thrones’ Ramsay Bolton as the “alien” Mick Mars. However, Australian actor Daniel Webber doesn’t look anything like Vince Neil, even though he effectively mimics the stage presence of Mötley Crüe’s lead singer.
