Blige was born on January 11, 1971, in Fordham Hospital in the borough of the Bronx, New York City Cora, a nurse, and Thomas Blige, a jazz musician.

She has three siblings; an older sister named LaTonya Blige-DaCosta and two half-siblings named Bruce Miller and Jonquell. Her half-siblings were from a later relationship her mother had after her divorce from Blige’s father.

Her early childhood was spent in Atlanta, Georgia where she was a singer in a pentecostal church. The family later moved to New York.

Blige’s father was a Vietnam War veteran. He suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism. After he left the family in the mid-1970s, the family survived on her mother’s salary.

When she was just five years old, Blige was molested by a family friend. She also suffered sexual harassment at the hands of her peers when she was a teenager. To numb the pain, Blige turned to alcohol, drugs, and promiscuous sex.
