Emily Hand Reunites with Father Thomas After 50 Days in Gaza: A Remarkable Story of Survival

Emily Hand a nine-year-old girl who was feared dead after being taken captive by Hamas in Gaza, has been successfully freed. The harrowing ordeal began when Emily was captured during a deadly attack on Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7.

Her father, Thomas, originally from Dun Laoghaire in Dublin, made an emotional plea for her release, describing the family’s experience as a “nightmare” and expressing that getting Emily back was his “reason for living.” After 50 challenging and complicated days, Emily has been reunited with her family, bringing immense joy and relief.

The Hand family expressed their gratitude for the unwavering support from people worldwide in their efforts to secure Emily’s return. In a statement, they said, “We can’t find the words to describe our emotions after 50 challenging and complicated days.”

During her captivity, Emily had a sleepover with her friend Hila Rotem, who was also freed. However, Hila’s mother, Raya Rotem, remains in Gaza. The Hand family acknowledged this in their statement, saying, “At the same time, we remember Raya Rotem and all the hostages who have yet to return. We will persist in doing everything in our power to bring them back home.”

Emily, who turned nine while in captivity, received a birthday celebration at St Stephen’s Green in Dublin, organized by her family in Ireland as they campaigned for her release. Thomas Hand met with Irish President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, and Tanaiste Micheal Martin.

Varadkar expressed the nation’s relief, saying, “An innocent child who was lost has now been found and returned, and our country breathes a massive sigh of relief. Our prayers have been answered.” He paid tribute to the Hand family’s tireless campaigning and emphasized the need to work for a permanent ceasefire and a just and lasting peace in the troubled region.

While Emily’s return is a cause for celebration, Varadkar emphasized the importance of not forgetting other hostages still in captivity in Gaza. He stated, “Their fate is unknown, but we hope that like Emily, they will also be allowed to return to their homes and their families.” The focus remains on supporting all families affected in this troubled region and working towards a better future.
