Don Shane, a longtime sports reporter for the Detroit television market, passed away at the age of 70.
Shane resigned in 2012 after serving as WXYZ’s longtime sportscaster. Prior to starting WXYZ in 1989 and staying there for 23 years, he worked at WDIV.
WXYZ broke the news of Shane’s death first on Saturday morning. It was not immediately clear what caused his demise.
In Detroit, Shane worked as a play-by-play commentator for the Detroit Pistons, the University of Michigan, and Michigan State University. He also held positions with WMAQ-TV in Chicago and WBZ-TV in Boston.
Shane won numerous honors for his reporting, including the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Award, 23 Michigan Emmy Awards, and the title of “Best Sports Announcer.”

Don Shane began his career as a basketball and football analyst for the Detroit Pistons, University of Michigan, and Michigan State University. He then performed his responsibilities at Boston’s WBZ-TV as well as Chicago’s WMAQ-TV. He was connected to WDIV before joining Channel 7.
Don Shane was born in Seattle, Washington, in the year 1952. He is an American citizen. He will be 70 years old when he passes away on February 24, 2023, which is the present year, 2023. He was a member of the European ethnicity.
