Why Did They Change Princess Toadstool To Princess Peach? – Celebrity

Why is Princess Toadstool now called Princess Peach? For gamers who were first introduced to the Mario series in the NES and Super NES eras, the princess that Mario has to rescue on a regular basis was known as Princess Toadstool. That’s what the instruction manuals and the in-game text say – so that’s her name.

Princess Daisy, sort of. Princess Peach was renamed Princess Toadstool in the American releases of the early games in the Mario franchise. Except Super Mario Land had a different localization team, resulting in some enemies getting a second English name and Princess Peach being named Princess Daisy.

For some reason when Super Mario Bros. was released in 1985, Nintendo decided to go by Princess Toadstool for the English name instead. Unlike American peaches which tend to be more red, orange and yellow on the outside, Japanese peaches are actually pink, which is quite suitable for Peach since she loves to wear pink!

There were still several Princess Toadstool references within Super Mario 64, but going forward in all future Mario games, she was only known as Princess Peach. Anyone that has played Mario games in the last 20 years will be familiar with the name Princess Peach.

Why did Peach get a name change?

Peach got a name change for the same reason Eggman and dozens of others did; translators were sick of food names. Naming characters after food was a rampent cliche in Japan during the 80s and early 90s, you can probably thank Dragon Ball for that.

In Japanese, Peach was always known as “Princess Peach”. But originally in America, Peach was known as “Princess Toadstool”. When Super Mario 64 came around, they combined the names so that her full name is “Princess Peach Toadstool”, but she just goes familiarly as “Peach”.

So in that case, Nintendo of America actually named the Koopalings, and Nintendo of Japan just took them.

Why was Daisy the Princess Peach in Super Mario Land?

I think the reason why people assumed that Daisy was Princess Peach for the 1990’s was because Daisy came from Sarasaland, a kingdom that was unheard of to many people, and it only appeared in one game.

For the next decade, Nintendo ignored this little oddity. But the fans never forgot, and Princess Daisy became a separate character in fanon. Nintendo finally acknowledged this by making Princess Daisy a playable character in various sports and party games beginning with Mario Tennis in 2000.
